We offer both online (energized) and offline (de-energized) testing and assessment services for both new and service aged medium voltage cables.
On-line cable PD testing remains one of our most popular services as cable condition is obtained without an outage. In order to perform this service, we access the cable shield which is grounded and place special split-core current sensors temporarily around the cable shield to de-couple the high frequency pulses associated with potential insulation breakdown. The pulses are processed using specialized oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers and custom software to determine the magnitude and severity of the cable under test.
For new installations or when the customer can obtain an outage, we utilize Very Low Frequency (VLF) Cable PD Mapping test equipment and Tan-Delta equipment to determine cable condition.
PD Mapping allows us to accurately determine PD magnitude and location along the length of the cable. This allows the cable owner to make efficient repairs and increase overall cable lifetime.
The Tan Delta test can detect conductive- types of insulation damage such as heavy water tree development in XLPE cables. Similar to insulation power factor testing, this test equipment provides one number related to the overall “bulk” condition of the cable under test. The results can help the cable owner prioritize cable replacement.
